Memorandum on the debts due to the University of Hongkong

on account of the President and Chinese Provincial Government

Scholarships.

On August 16th, 1924, the Tai Chiao Fu wrote the

University, acknowledging a letter of July 17th, and stating

that they had received a letter from the Ministry of Education

informing them that steps were being taken to raise the sum of

$54,70 (amount outstanding on August 31st, 1924, for Peking

Government Scholarships) and as soon as it had been obtained

a remittance would be made.

On Jebruary 11th, 1925, Professor C. a. Middleton

Smith wrote to the Vice-Chancellor informing him that Mr.

Liang Shi Yi (Ex-Premier of China), who was about to leave

for Peking, had definicely promised that he would take up

with the Wai Chiao Pu the question of the payment of the

debt to the University incurred by the Peking Government

Scholars. Professor Middleton Smith suggested that a letter,

with a statement of account, be sent to Mr. Liang Shi Yi.

The Vice-Chancellor wrose to Mr. Liang Shi Yi, under date of

Jeorary clst, 1925, enclosing details of the sum owed by the

Central Government of China, which amounted to $54,730.

(The

dest amounted to $81,000 if the money owed oy the Provincial

Governments were included.)

3. On March 3rd, 1925, the Registrar furnished Mr.

Liang Shi Yi with particulars of the Provincial Government

accounts for the education of their students up to 1923.
